Biography. Goethe was born on August 28, 1749, in Frankfurt, Germany, to a lawyer and the daughter of the mayor of Frankfurt. He studied law in Leipzig and Strasbourg (France). Based on his early fame as a poet and novelist, Goethe, at age 26, was invited by the 18-year-old Duke of Sachsen-Weimar to join his court as an advisor.
The most famous university in the city is the Johann-Wolfgang-Goethe-University, founded in 1914. In the history of philosophy in the 20th century, the "Frankfurt School" around Theodor W. Adorno and Max Horkheimer occupies a prominent position.
Goethe cultural societies, reading rooms, and examination and language centres have played a role in the cultural and educational policies of Germany for more than 60 years.
